Shem was not at the sheep pen, and Mangy wanted to go back to the living quarters, where Noah’s wife would be preparing the evening meal. Thief wanted to look for Shem. He had walked almost the length of this side of the ark when a sound from the room with the small gate caught his attention.

“Hsst.” A shiver went down Thief’s back as he listened. It was the snake! Curious, Thief stepped inside the room and soon saw the long, dark shadow in its cage. Once more it hissed as it reared its head and stared with glistening eyes at Thief.

“You did not come here because you wished to come, but because I called you,” the snake said in the voice of a creature used to commanding.

“No! I came because I chose to come,” Thief insisted. He did not venture closer to the cage, but stood where he was.

“You may think what you like, of course,” the snake said. His tone had become less haughty, though not quite friendly. “I assume the rains have stopped. We should soon be leaving this ark, if so.”

“Wrong,” Thief said. “The rains have stopped, but the waters still cover everything.”

The snake lowered his head a bit. “Then it is true that all things on the earth perished, and we alone on the ark remain alive. As it should be, the strongest live and the weak die.”

“Wrong again,” Thief retorted. “There are many weak things on board the ark. I should think you would have noticed when you came aboard.” He quickly added, “And strong ones too.”

“Yes? Well, we shall see what lies ahead soon enough. You may leave now,” it said, “and I shall take my rest and wait patiently until the time comes.” With the barest of movement the snake slithered into a dark comer of the cage.

Thief felt he had been dismissed. He retreated into the walkway and stared back at the room. No more sounds came from it. Whatever that snake said, Thief knew he had gone in there out of plain curiosity. Still, when the snake’s eyes had stared at him, Thief did feel something, and he didn’t like whatever it was. He shook himself hard, sending hairs flying. He would not come here again.

Shem was just coming out of one of the rooms on the walkway below. Thief hurried to meet him.
